International mother tongue day is celebrated annually on the 21st of February. It is a day to celebrate linguistic diversity, the uniqueness of languages across the globe.
It is to make sure that other languages do not become extinct, to make sure that they are celebrated as well. It is basically a day where people get to learn other people’s languages, their culture and their way of doing things.

It was created by UNESCO (the United Nations Education, Science and Cultural Organisation) in order to promote the dissemination of mother tongues and a fuller awareness of linguistic and cultural traditions throughout the world and to inspire solidarity based on understanding, tolerance and dialogue.

Lindile Ndlela (22), says that she does not believe in teaching a child English. “English was meant for us to understand each other but when we communicate with people who understand our language, let us use our mother tongue, promote it and make it to be known”.
Asande Munyai (19) whose language is Tshivenda says that, she does not wish mother languages to be extinct because it has history, “our languages have a meaning behind and the next generation should be taught where they come from”.

English has taken over our home languages, people no longer know their languages, says Letlhogonolo Makwele (24). “Today, young children do not know how to speak their mother languages, now English has become means of communication”.

Kearabilwe Motshwaiwa(23), a second level in Education gives an insight of what this day means to him.

However, the car will be taken back once the partnership comes to end after eighteen months.DSM gave TUT FM the car so that it becomes easier for their journalists to cover stories as well as meeting up with their sources.

TUT FM’s representative, George Maremo said that they are overwhelmed as a station as this token came in time of need, “we do not have a dedicated car for the station, hence this car will make things easier, we will use it to gather all the information that is needed by the station”.

It has been a couple of years now since South Africa started facing issues of load shedding. Not only does it affect large and small businesses, students are affected as well.Across the country students are academically affected by load shedding, some end up not being able to study.
An example of load shedding schedule

However, it is important that you learn how to manage your time wisely so that you are not affected when it is time for load shedding,it is of paramount importance that you manage your time wisely ,get to know the schedule for the entire week or month as well as the stages which load shedding is currently in.

Students who do not plan well end up being really affected by load shedding and fail to do their work in expected time. Each and every student has a different strategy to avoid being inconvenienced by load shedding and some call it the "load shedding survival tips".

Asanda Qwabe(22), a second year student in Information Technology at TUT, says that she plans accordingly, "I always check the load shedding timetable online to avoid any inconveniences, for instance if they say there is going to be load shedding at 20:00hrs until midnight, I make sure that i cook on time and work on my assignments before there is any power cut"

"Load shedding really affects us as students, I remember during my first year last year in time for exams there was load shedding almost everyday so I had to prioritize my time during the day, study more and play less and at the end,it paid off" ,says Rethabile Mguni(19) , a second year Analytical Chemistry student at UJ.

Floyd Mathebula(22) a 3rd year journalism student at TUT says that he advises students to use their time wisely, have good time management skills, which is one of the load shedding survival tips.
Some retails stores have gone an extra mile to provide the "load shedding survival kit" for citizens in times of load shedding.

Ensure that your cell phone is always fully charged when power is available, and get a power bank as back-up (remember to keep it charged). If you need to get some work done, charge your laptop battery too. Also remember to have temporary lighting such as a torch and candles.
Always have food stuffs and snacks which do not need to be refrigerated or heated before you can eat them.

MATRIC MEMORIES

Well known as matric and umalusi to others. Every year the Department of Education sets examinations  for those in matric or Grade12 to say. Matric is the final year in high school before one goes to a higher learning institution. Matric exams come with a lot of pressure and different people handle the pressure differently.
Since the introduction of the CAPS curriculum the class of 2019 has managed to produce the highest pass rate ever. However, things are kind of different now than before, I remember when my cousin completed her matric back then in 2013 they published names in newspapers unlike now which they only have candidate numbers on the newspapers

2019 top achievers-google images
A second year journalism student Pabalelo Mathabatha(20) says that she was excited and scared at the same time about her results,’ I rarely slept that night, I was waiting to see how I performed, and because of the hard work I put in I passed’ She goes on to advice first year students to take their work seriously as no one will be following them around so that they do their work ‘here no one is going to follow you around about your assignments, they are your own responsibility, learn to balance between social and academic life’.
A 4th year education student Ayanda Zulu(23) says that she was neither happy nor excited about her matric results as the year had been rough on her, "I was shocked that I had actually made it, I did not expect such results and to the class of 2019 it is never too late to redo you grade, it all starts in the mind, to those coming to University learn to balance your leisure and study time accordingly”

Some people have it the hard way and some the easiest way, remember education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.

Going to university is taking a step closer to achieving your goals, being there won’t be a walk in the park, you need consistency, discipline and the purpose why you are there. Along the way you’ll face challenges to a point where you want to give up but remember “why you are doing this”

“Studying is important but so is letting go and letting loose, but only when it is done correctly” Ayanda

Will it ever come to an end?

Gender based violence has been escalating in a very alarming way in our country. Women are not safe in the hands of men, the very same men who are supposed to protect us are the ones who violet us.

Statistics show that 1 in 25 women is a victim of rape and only a few cases are opened.
Are women in South Africa safe?
Are the young girls safe?
Imagine having to live in fear because someone else sees your body as a crime scene? The problem is not with how women dress the problem is how men handle themselves, the problem is that the society blames us for wearing clothes that we are comfortable in.
How many rape and murder cases have been reported only in August? And how many of them have been solved? Only a handful I suppose, that's if they are really solved
Taken from Instagram

"The same blood that oozes between her legs as she hears the screams of her little born King is the same blood that oozes between her legs as her King hears her screams as she gives up her ghost"
                                                        Phila Praise

Enough Is Enough, let us stand as one, fight against gender based violence. In the near future we will not have women to celebrate because all of us will be in the graveyards.

We the victims yet we still get blamed, the perpetrators are turned out to be victims, when we report rape cases the first question we are asked is "What were you wearing?" Why am I not asked what the perpetrator was wearing?
Why should what I was wearing be an issue?

Whenever rape cases are reported clothes are always an issue? Did the 8-month year old baby wear revealing clothes that actually lured you to rape them? Did the 75-year old granny wear short skirts?
What I am wearing should not be a justification for you to rape me

DIMCO and YWHM lock horns in the Izintombi and PEXA tournament.

Izintombi and PEXA collaboration held a charity tournament on the 9th of August 2019. The main objective of the tournament was to donate things to the needy the teams fought tooth and nail for the top spot, they all gave in their best performance but unfortunately one team had to be crowned the champions.
YWHM and DIMCO went head to head in the netball games held at Block CC Soshanguve. It was one of the toughest games in the tournament.DIMCO, the defending champions played with their hearts to keep the title again this year but YWHM which locked horns with DIMCO in the finals also fought hard for the championship.
YWHM managed to snatch the championship from DIMCO by a one goal difference.DIMCO had control of the game from the beginning but tables changed just after half time and YWHM took over.
Kelebogile, who plays for DIMCO says “the game was fair because the empires were fair in the beginning of the game, but when they saw that we were winning they started referring things which were not even there, however overall we are happy that we made it to the finals even though we lost to YWHM with just one goal which shows that if there was more time we were going to claim the title again”.
On the other side YWHM was excited that they gained victory over DIMCO and to being the champions of the Izintombi and PEXA tournament. One of the YWHM players noted “the game was really tough, when we saw DIMCO leading we gave up because they are a strong team, they know what they are doing, but that one goal made us the champions and I am proud of my team mates.
With DIMCO LOSING 16-17 T to YWHM it was difficult for them to accept their fate. “I am very disappointed that we became second best this year, but I don’t blame my team they gave in their best effort, there has to be a loser and a winner in every game and this time we are the losers, we will rectify our mistakes and reclaim our championship on the next tournament” said DIMCO coach Donald Maluleke.

Will the government ever keep their promises?

google photos

It seems as if toying with people’s emotions is what the government does best. As we had general election s this year, different political parties campaigned in different day in order to win the hearts of the citizens. Rallies and everything was done to convince people to vote for them however, it was all in the hands of the voters to decide which party they want to rule.
For the first time ever, it was uncertain which political party was going to reign supreme in the 2019 elections as all if not most parties completely sold themselves to the voters. It was a battle as every leader fought tooth and nail for power but it was unfortunate for some as majority of voters decided to go with ANC and not the rest of the parties.

google photos
ANC has been in power since 1994, there has been change but the question still remains; does the change benefit citizens? Are the completely satisfied with how things are done? It does not seem like that as they complain about the negligence of the government just after elections are over. Themba Nkadimeng, an elderly man from Soshanguve says that they have been struggling with service delivery for the past 5 years, the street lights in his area are not working and this has made the area to become a high crime zone, “during the elections campaign the president made an assurance that by the end of May the issue would have been fixed but today its July and we are still faced with this situation, this clearly indicates that they only care about votes ,once they get them they don’t pay attention to our grievances”.
google photos
It is not only in Soshanguve where residents are complaining about service delivery, other neighboring places like Wintervelt, GA Rankuwa are also facing such issues. In GA Rankuwa zone 4, there a sewage burst which has been there for years as well, it affects the businesses of people who sell things on the streets in order to make a living. And promises have been made to deal with but there is no progress it is just like water off the duck’s back.
During the election campaigns, it was highlighted that we should grow South Africa together, but how do we grow it when they only care about themselves? when they make promises but never deliver? Where is the change that we have been voting for? Where is the change that we have been promised? Or it is yet to be made?
Citizens have realized that the government is full of empty promises and have written placards to express themselves. For years now people have been voting for change but there is still nothing. Poor areas are affected the most yet they are the ones who vote a lot with anticipation that they will see the change, but they never see any change. One citizen highlighted that parties buy votes with their t-shirts; “are we supposed to get service delivery from these t-shirts, are these t-shirts going to give us work? No they won’t but they use them to gain votes and still fail to deliver”
